UNC TARS and Teacher Preparation Teacher Education Student Recruitment A major effort of the UNC TARS program is the recruitment of future teachers of students with disabilities into teacher preparation programs in North Carolina. Special education is one of four teaching areas that have a critical shortage of highly qualified and certified teachers. UNC TARS has developed and implemented a technical assistance process that provides assistance to university and college special education teacher preparation programs in the development and implementation of a comprehensive student recruitment system. The technical assistance includes the involvement of nationally recognized teacher education recruitment specialists in the process. UNC TARS initiated the student recruitment technical assistance with Mars Hill College in western North Carolina during the 2005-2006 academic year. This academic year, 2006-2007, UNC TARS is working with three additional teacher education programs (East Carolina University, Greensboro College, and Winston-Salem State University) with the goal of developing and implementing a comprehensive recruitment plan. The long range plan for this component of the NCSIPP II project is to provide recruitment assistance to approximately ten to twelve teacher education programs in North Carolina by 2011. As individual student recruitment plans are developed, and with the permission of the teacher education programs, we will include the plan in this section of the NCSIP website. |
